RCS (Rich Communication Services) is not an app or a brand but a carrier messaging protocol — the modern successor to SMS and MMS. It upgrades default texting with high-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts, file sharing and better group chat, delivered through carriers, Google Messages on Android and, since 2024, the iPhone.

History
RCS began as an industry initiative in 2007 and its first specification came under the GSMA in 2008, but early carrier rollouts were fragmented. Google acquired Jibe Mobile in 2015 and helped create the unified Universal Profile in 2016, then pushed RCS directly through Google Messages from 2019. Apple added RCS support in iOS 18 in September 2024, bringing it to the iPhone.
How many people use RCS?
Google announced that RCS in Google Messages passed one billion monthly active users in November 2023, and reported over one billion RCS messages sent per day in the United States by May 2025 after Apple’s iOS 18 adoption. A single number’s RCS support depends on its carrier, device and region.

Who uses RCS?
RCS is used by Android users through Google Messages and, since iOS 18, by iPhone users, as the upgraded default texting experience. Businesses use RCS Business Messaging for branded, interactive messages. Because support is carrier-, device- and region-dependent, checking whether a number supports RCS is genuinely useful.

RCS availability is carrier-dependent. Major operators backing it include AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the United States; Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Vodafone in Europe; and NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank, China Mobile and South Korean carriers in Asia.
